Pet-Friendly Holiday Destinations in South Africa

Pet-Friendly Holiday Destinations in South Africa
Pet Care 4 May 2026

Travelling with a pet in South Africa has become significantly easier as the hospitality industry responds to growing demand from pet owners who refuse to leave their animals behind. From self-catering cottages in the Winelands to boutique guesthouses on the Garden Route, pet-friendly accommodation is increasingly well-equipped, thoughtfully designed, and genuinely welcoming rather than merely tolerant. The key is knowing where to look and how to plan a trip that works for both you and your pet.

The Garden Route remains the most popular destination for pet-owning South Africans, and for good reason. Knysna, Wilderness, and Plettenberg Bay offer kilometres of dog-friendly beaches, forest trails where leashed dogs are permitted, and a growing number of accommodations that include pet amenities such as feeding stations, dog beds, and fenced gardens. The Goukamma Nature Reserve outside Knysna allows dogs on leash on certain trails, providing an exceptional experience for both dogs and their owners. Plettenberg Bay's Central Beach is an all-day dog-friendly beach where your dog can swim freely — a highlight of any coastal holiday.

The Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provides excellent hiking terrain for active dogs and their owners. Several resorts in the Champagne Valley and Central Drakensberg region accept pets, and the high-altitude trails offer magnificent scenery without the extreme heat that can make coastal summer travel uncomfortable for dogs. Bring tick prevention — the Drakensberg grasslands are tick-rich environments — and ensure your pet is fit for the elevation and terrain before undertaking longer hikes.

The Cape Winelands offer perhaps the most civilised pet-friendly experience in the country. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch have a growing number of restaurants with outdoor seating that welcomes well-behaved dogs. Several wine estates allow dogs in their gardens and tasting areas. The rolling vineyards and mountain scenery make for beautiful morning walks, and the cool Western Cape temperatures are far more comfortable for dogs than the Highveld summer heat. Book well in advance for peak season — the best pet-friendly properties fill up quickly.

Before any trip, ensure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and tick and flea prevention. Carry a copy of your pet's vaccination certificate, particularly if you plan to use boarding kennels or veterinary services en route. Bring your pet's regular food to avoid digestive upset from a dietary change, and pack a first aid kit that includes antiseptic, bandages, tweezers for tick removal, and your vet's emergency contact number. With good preparation, a holiday with your pet becomes one of the most rewarding travel experiences available in this extraordinary country.
