Fake rescue and adoption-fee scams
What happened
A documented scam pattern. Scammers pose as animal shelters or rescues, advertising pets for adoption and asking for a "refundable" deposit to hold the animal or a fee to ship it to you. The pet, and often the rescue, is not real. Deal only with registered shelters you can visit (SPCA branches, known local rescues), be suspicious of any rescue that will only ship and only takes untraceable payment, and confirm the organisation exists before paying an adoption fee.
