When a pet "seller" asks for your ID: identity theft

Other pet scam South Africa (nationwide) Published 28 Jul 2026

What happened

A documented scam pattern with a nasty twist. Beyond taking your money, some syndicates ask buyers to send a copy of their ID "for the courier paperwork". They then use your identity to register fake websites and email addresses in your name, and even show your ID to later victims to make the fraud look legitimate (News24). No genuine pet seller or courier needs a copy of your ID to deliver an animal. Never send your ID, passport or a selfie-with-ID to someone selling a pet online.
