Fake microchip "we scanned your pet" recovery scams
What happened
A documented scam pattern. A caller claims a vet or shelter scanned your lost pet's microchip and needs a release or handling fee before returning the animal. Genuine microchip recoveries through registries and vets do not demand a payment to a personal account to hand your pet back. Verify any such claim by phoning the vet or shelter directly on a number you look up yourself, and never pay a "release fee" to a caller.
