South African Pet Food Brands: A Comprehensive Review

South African Pet Food Brands: A Comprehensive Review
Nutrition 22 May 2026

The South African pet food market has expanded dramatically, with local brands competing alongside well-established international names. Choosing the right food for your pet involves more than comparing prices — the ingredient list, nutritional adequacy statement, and the life stage the food is formulated for all matter. An informed approach to label reading will serve your pet far better than brand loyalty or marketing claims alone.

Montego is arguably South Africa's most prominent homegrown pet food brand and offers a wide range of products at accessible price points. Their Karoo and Classic ranges are widely available and represent solid value for budget-conscious pet owners. The Montecore range steps up in quality with higher meat content and reduced filler ingredients. For owners seeking a premium South African option, Montego's Field + Forest brand uses free-range and game meat proteins that are well-suited to South African dogs and cats.

Royal Canin and Hill's Science Diet are the most trusted names in prescription veterinary nutrition and are frequently recommended by vets for pets with specific health conditions. Their breed-specific and life-stage formulations are backed by extensive research and feeding trials. However, the premium pricing of these brands is not always justified for a healthy adult pet without special dietary needs — many owners find that a mid-range food with a strong nutritional profile delivers equivalent results at lower cost.

Grain-free diets became fashionable several years ago based on the premise that grains are unnatural or harmful for dogs and cats. The evidence for this claim is weak, and a 2018 alert by the US Food and Drug Administration linked grain-free diets high in legumes and pulses to a rise in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. The science is still developing, but if you are considering a grain-free food, discuss the decision with your vet, particularly if your dog is a breed predisposed to heart conditions.

Ultimately, the best pet food is one that your pet thrives on — maintaining a healthy weight, good coat condition, firm stools, and good energy levels. If your pet is doing well on their current food and your vet has no concerns, there is rarely a compelling reason to change. If you want to upgrade, look for a food with a named animal protein as the first ingredient, an AAFCO or FEDIAF nutritional adequacy statement, and a product manufactured in a country with robust food safety regulations. Transition to any new food gradually over seven to ten days to avoid digestive upset.
