Sick puppies and no-refund backyard breeders

Puppy / pet deposit scam South Africa (nationwide) Published 28 Jul 2026

What happened

A documented problem, sometimes fraud, sometimes reckless backyard breeding. A puppy is sold cheaply and cash-only, often from a home or a car-park meetup, then falls seriously ill within days (parvovirus and distemper are common) and the "breeder" blocks you or refuses any refund. Warning signs: no vaccination or deworming records, no vet contact, puppies sold younger than eight weeks, and pressure to pay cash and take the puppy immediately. Always get written proof of vaccinations, meet the mother with the litter, and buy from breeders who welcome a vet check.
