The listing on PetGuru was simple: a nine-month-old male Africanis cross, found wandering near Tzaneen, neutered and vaccinated by the local rescue. Brown and white, medium size, described as playful and gentle with children. The photo showed a dog sitting very straight, looking directly at the camera with enormous amber eyes.
We have two daughters, aged six and nine. We had been looking for three months for a dog that would be safe with children and suitable for a suburban garden. Nothing had felt right.
This felt right.
We drove up on a Saturday morning — four hours each way — and met him in the rescue coordinator's garden. He walked straight to our daughters and sat between them. Not jumping, not pulling. Just sat.
We named him Limpopo on the drive home. He slept the entire way with his head on my younger daughter's lap.
That was fourteen months ago. He has not had a single incident. He is gentle, loyal, intelligent, and fiercely protective of our daughters in a way that has never once tipped into aggression. He is the best thing that ever came from a four-hour drive.
PetGuru made it possible to find him. We would never have known he existed otherwise.
