Milo was a feral cat living in the parking garage of my apartment building in Hatfield. The security guards called him a nuisance. Residents complained. Someone suggested poison.
I started leaving food out for him instead. Over three months he moved from eating at the far end of the garage to eating a metre from my feet. Then one freezing July night he followed me through the door and slept on my couch.
The vet estimated him at around two years old. He was intact, full of worms, and had a nasty abscess on his cheek from a fight. After neutering, treatment, and vaccines he transformed into the most affectionate cat I have ever known.
A friend who works at a retirement home in Centurion mentioned that they had been looking for a therapy animal. I brought Milo for a trial visit. The residents adored him. He sat calmly on laps, purred when stroked, and showed no fear of wheelchairs or walking frames.
Milo now visits the home every Wednesday. The staff say the residents who interact with him show measurably improved mood and engagement. A parking garage stray turned therapy cat — sometimes the best things come from the most unexpected places.
