The injured-lost-pet emergency vet ransom scam

Fake vet bill or insurance fee scam South Africa (nationwide) Published 28 Jul 2026

What happened

A documented scam pattern, a crueller version of the lost-pet ransom. The caller says they found your missing pet but it is hurt, and demands money for emergency surgery or vet bills before they will "release" the animal. In reality they do not have your pet at all. No honest finder asks you to pay a vet bill before you have seen the animal or spoken to the actual vet. Insist on contacting the treating vet directly, and never pay medical money to a stranger sight-unseen.
